As residential development in New Zealand continues to grow, the use of retaining walls to create stable building platforms and usable outdoor spaces is becoming more common.
Over the years, protecting these retaining walls has become easier with the availability of proprietary, off-the-shelf solutions. What was once a complex and time-consuming task is now straightforward, thanks to our innovations.
In line with this, Urban Group has developed a range of generic Producer Statements (PS1) that meet building consent and council requirements. These statements are readily available for download on our website and cover all regions of New Zealand.
Steps in Selecting the Right Balustrade
Identify the imposed load: The first step is to determine the correct imposed load the balustrade needs to withstand. Consulting with one of our technical representatives is highly recommended. They will ask specific questions to help identify what imposed loads the balustrade going to need to withstand. Once the loading requirement is understood, they will be in a position to recommend a suitable style of fence.
Consider the topography: If the retaining wall is sloping, the fencing needs to follow the contour. Raking balustrade panels are an excellent option for this. Many of our products offer a rakeable option, allowing you to maximise post centres without stepping the fence line.
Fixing the retaining wall posts: Take into consideration how you will fix the retaining wall posts. Common solutions include side fixing with timber coach screws, casting the posts into concrete behind the retaining wall, or top fixing to a capping board. Our generic PS1s cover a range of options for this. It would be a good idea to consider this before building your retaining wall, so provision can be made that will allow one of our pre-engineered solutions to be utilised.
Ordering and installation
Once you have selected a product, you can place an order with us. Most options are typically in stock and can be delivered to the site within two to three days. For customers nearby one of our physical branches, delivery can be arranged using our own local delivery trucks.
After installation, you will usually need to provide a PS3, a declaration confirming the fence has been installed according to the supplier’s PS1.
We offer technical support throughout the project, from estimating and selecting the right solution to providing tips and tricks for a faster installation. We are your go-to for all things balustrading!
