A change of direction pays off

A move from event operations into landscaping has proven a successful career change for Readylawn’s Taylor Allsop, who has progressed from labourer to landscape foreman in just a few years

Christchurch-based Taylor will be 25 when he lines up at Young Landscaper of the Year and, despite only entering the industry in 2022, has already built an extensive range of practical skills.

After previously working in event operations, Taylor decided to give landscaping a go – a move that quickly developed into something much more than ‘just another job’.

“I came into landscaping from event operations and pretty quickly realised it was something I wanted to pursue. I’ve been lucky to progress from labourer to foreman and build up a really broad range of skills along the way,” he explained.

Since joining Readylawn, he has completed his landscape construction apprenticeship and developed experience across turf, planting, irrigation, drainage, artificial turf and timber work, as well as paving and concrete.

His progression has also taken him beyond the tools. As a landscape foreman, Taylor now supervises staff, manages projects and operates machinery, while remaining actively involved in delivering work on site.

Readylawn managing director Roger Morgan says Taylor has been an incredibly fast learner.

“Taylor very quickly proved to have what it takes to do well in the landscape industry – and life in general,” says Roger.

He points to Taylor’s work ethic, positive attitude and ability to maintain quality, while understanding the importance of keeping projects on schedule.

The trust he has earned means Taylor can now be given a project brief, client details and a team and be relied upon to deliver the job with minimal supervision. Roger believes that experience puts Taylor in a strong position to take on further leadership roles within the company.

Putting his skills to the test at Young Landscaper of the Year 2026

For Taylor, Young Landscaper of the Year is an opportunity to find out where his skills stand after a rapid first few years in the industry.

“I wanted to test myself and get a better idea of where my skills are at. I’m also keen to get feedback and find out where I can improve,” he said.

“I’m hoping I can take what I learn from the competition back to the team. It’s also a great chance to meet other people in the industry and see how they approach things.”

It’s another step in a career that Taylor could hardly have anticipated a few years ago.

His progression from event operations to labourer, apprentice and now foreman demonstrates the different pathways available into professional landscaping – and how quickly those willing to learn and take on responsibility can progress.

Roger believes YLOY is a natural next challenge.

“The experience he has gained in the past few years lends him to future leadership roles in the company,” he says, “and competitions like Young Landscaper of the Year are a perfect stepping stone.”
