Kūmānu Environmental has received the Special Feature Award at the 2025 Landscapes of Distinction Awards for its standout work on Te Pā Harakeke

Judges said it was “a prime example of how a single project can seamlessly integrate complex stormwater management, tidal flows, ecological restoration and an ever-evolving play space”.

Under the leadership of Richard Smethurst and Euan Milne, Kūmānu Environmental transformed an underutilised estuarine site in Nelson into a public play space and functioning wetland ecosystem – completed in partnership with Nelson City Council.

Rebecca Dawkins, Manager Capital Projects at Nelson City Council, praised the company’s ability to deliver amid various disruptions.

“We had the wettest winter for some time and Covid was raging in the community, so whole teams of workers were often away sick,” she said. “Despite this, Kūmānu Environmental delivered to a very high standard – on time and under budget.

“Richard demonstrated a clear understanding of what the budget was and constantly adapted the design to work within it, while still delivering an amazing space.”

Engaging playspace

“Te Pā Harakeke integrates land drainage, tidal wetland restoration and native planting with interactive play and learning areas. The design includes rope and agility courses, a bird-watching hut and shaded seating – all shaped with locally sourced natural materials.

“The play spaces and information panels, the structures for play and group activities all combine well and complement the natural environment,” the judges said. “It creates a functional and educational community space, as well as providing for the environment and improving an important drainage and tidal ecosystem.”

Well-considered products

Additional innovations included the use of Danline marine rope – resistant to salt and UV – and

hessian matting for erosion control. Custom timber elements were chamfered and filleted to meet playground safety standards, and a compliance certifier was engaged by Kūmānu Environmental, exceeding client expectations.

“The staff took obvious pride in what they were building for the community,” said Dawkins. “The finish on the hard and soft landscaping was exceptional. The site was always tidy and safe and demonstrated a clear understanding of protecting both themselves and the public.”
